BOLLING TO HOLD HEART HEALTH SUMMIT ON MONDAY

-Bolling to bring together leading health care policy makers and stakeholders to discuss legislative solutions to Virginia’s heart health challenges-

-Summit is next phase of Lieutenant Governor’s Challenge Heart Health initiative-

 

RICHMOND – Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling will hold a Heart Health Summit on Monday, June 22 from 9:00-11:00AM in House Room 1 of the State Capitol Building.  The Summit will bring together health care administrators, policy makers and stakeholders to discuss heart disease in Virginia; current programs that encourage cardiovascular health; address heart disease and find workable, realistic legislative solutions to improve Virginians heart health. 

 

Lieutenant Governor Bolling will be joined by Virginia State Health Commissioner Dr. Karen Remley, President of U.S. Preventative Medicine Fred Goldstein, and representatives from VCU Health Systems, American Heart Association, YMCA, American Lung Association, Alliance for Healthier Virginia, the American College of Cardiology and AstraZeneca.  The Summit is open to the public and all interested individuals are encouraged to attend.

 

Ideas generated from the Summit will be analyzed, reviewed and considered for a final report to be submitted to members of the General Assembly and the Governor’s office prior to the 2010 Legislative Session.

 

The Lieutenant Governor’s Heart Health Summit is the next phase of the Lieutenant Governor’s Challenge: Your Heart is in Your Hands initiative, an incentive based physical fitness and nutrition program, where Virginians set individual, attainable goals of 30-minutes of daily exercise, track their progress on a personal webpage and receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal for achieving their goal.

 

To date 3,667 Virginians have participated in the Challenge and 1,253 people have reached their goal and received their Gold, Silver and Bronze medal.  Participants have completed 37,290 hours of physical activity.

 

In March 2009 Lieutenant Governor Bolling received a Heart Health Advocacy Award from the American College of Cardiology for his work on the Lieutenant Governor’s Challenge.
