The nation’s lieutenant governors are pursuing programs regarding energy, health and children as they welcome new officers to lead the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA). Thirty-one NLGA members gathered in Williamsburg, Virginia for the NLGA Annual Meeting ending July 27, 2007.
The members passed three resolutions, as follows:
Wisconsin Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton had twenty lieutenant governors bi-partisanly co-sponsor the energy resolution. Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder sponsored the mentoring resolution to encourage states to set up programs, like Missouri’s, which enable state employees to serve as mentors. NLGA will continue its national health campaigns: “Ending Cervical Cancer in our Lifetime” and “Helping Americans Breathe Easier – Asthma Awareness.”
Four attendees are announced candidates for governor, as follows: Lt. Governor John Carney in Delaware, Lt. Governor Dennis Daugaard in South Dakota, Lt. Governor Diane Denish in New Mexico, and Lt. Governor Duke Aiona in Hawaii. A December, 2006 study showed the office of lieutenant governor is the most successful office to springboard to governor.
The NLGA Executive Committee was selected for 2007 – 2008, as follows:
· Chair Lt. Governor Jack Dalrymple of North Dakota, Vice-Chair Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton of Wisconsin, and Treasurer Lt. Governor Bill Bolling of Virginia, as officers
· Lt. Governor Anthony Brown of Maryland, Lt. Governor Bill Halter of Arkansas, and Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp of Florida were added as new members to the Executive Committee
